Hello! Thank you for visiting my fundraising page for Kansas Big Brothers Big Sisters (BBBS)! This is an organization I am active in as a mentor and fundraiser because I believe in it's mission. I hope by sharing my experience with BBBS, you will see the value it provides to our community and choose to support it by helping me meet my fundraising goal.
I became a Big with the organization about 7 years ago as a way to give back to our community's youth. As a child of a single parent home, I am personally aware of the importance and impact of strong mentors to adolescents. BBBS strives to create long lasting mentoring relationships by carefully matching Bigs (mentors) with Littles (mentees) through a rigorous process. The process ensures the safety of the Little with a background check and character references, but also a compatible match through an extensive interview if both Bigs and Littles to align interests.
7 years ago I was patched with my Little Sister, Kamariyae. When we were matched she was a new Middle School student, looking to find ways to fit into a new school. She is now planning for her future and considering colleges for application! In the time we've been matched I have been so inspired by her resilience, creativity, and kindness. She has overcome many challenges including moving homes many times and schools a few. She frequently turns to her creative side to find calm. She is an amazing artist, something I enjoy encouraging when I can. We love to visit local art museums or galleries or even make some of our own with sidewalk chalk or paint. It has been such a joy to be a part of Kamariyae's life and to watch her grow into the wonderful young adult she is. I am honored to be her Big and strive to support her passions and provide a steady sounding board.
You might think my experience is unique in the duration of my match, but I've learned by attending many of BBBS events that it is not. I attribute their many long term matches to their match process. This process costs money to recruit Bigs, thoroughly vet them, and match them with a waiting Little that is the best fit. This process costs about $1,000 per match. My goal is to raise funds to support 2 new matches in our community.
If you are able, I would love your support to reach this goal. No amount is too small! Thank you so much for your support.
If you are interested in becoming a Big, please reach out and I'd love to share my experiences further with you and answer any questions you have.
